IBS or Irritable Bowel Syndrome is characterised by a range of symptoms including, but not restricted to diarrhoea, constipation, stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, cramping and flatulence or gas. It can also cause tiredness and a lack energy, feeling sick, backache and because of this, anxiety and depression.
These symptoms can come and go over time. There can be days when symptoms seem better and days where they are worse ( flare ups).
Diet is often one of the causes of IBS and your doctor may have already referred you to a dietician who might recommend a low FODMAP diet.
You may have been prescribed medication by your doctor for your symptoms.
Sometimes if you have had IBS for a while without much improvement, your doctor may recommend talking therapies, especially if stress or anxiety are triggering your symptoms.
Hypnotherapy is now acknowledged within the medical profession as an evidenced based therapy that can help alleviate the symptoms of IBS and NICE ( National Institute for Clinical Excellence) list hypnotherapy as one of the treatments to help with IBS.
Research by Professor Whorwell at the University of Manchester has demonstrated that over 60% of IBS sufferers who undertake hypnotherapy see long term improvement.
